In January 2024, the Bundestag passed important changes to naturalization and citizenship law:

Retention of previous citizenship

No loss of German citizenship when applying for another citizenship

Shortened naturalization periods

Acquisition of German citizenship by birth in Germany after only 5 years of residence of the parents (if one parent already has a settlement permit)
